Up North is a forthcoming documentary about the Hudson Bay Project
Up North is a film that focuses on the interconnectedness of the ecosystem of the tundra. The film will consider the people involved with Hudson Bay Project (HBP) as well as the changes in the environment of the arctic tundra. From the beginning, Rocky Rockwell maintained a relationship with the northern native communities - the Dene, the Inuit and the Cree - learning a lot about life on the tundra from these indigenous peoples. The Hudson Bay Project also forged a strong connection to the town of Churchill, Manitoba. While the Hudson Bay Project began with a focus on banding and studying Snow Geese, the scope eventually grew to include studies on many plants and animals of the tundra - from tiny wildflowers to polar bears.
The film is currently in production and we look forward to sharing updates as the film takes shape.

ON LOCATION
The following images are behind the scenes shots from our filming of Up North.
Taking Flight Productions at the University of North Dakota, November 2016
Our film crew recently visited UND to catch up with some of the same researchers and scientists we met at La Perouse Bay this past summer. Every fall, after the small, remote camp near the Hudson Bay is boarded up, the work moves from the field to the lab. The scientists investigate the material that was collected in the summer and analyze the data. We picked up the story here—to take an in depth look at the people and research that's helping shed light on the Hudson Bay ecosystem.

La Perouse Bay, July 2016
The Taking Flight Productions crew made the long trek north to Manitoba's La Perouse Bay this past summer to film Rocky Rockwell in his element—the remote wilderness of the subarctic, at the edge of the Hudson Bay. This has been Rocky's summer since 1969. Every structure—from the dining hall to the out-house—was hand built by Rocky and his team of researchers. Although short on creature comforts, the feeling of community and team work is always pervasive.

We were pleased to interview Robert "Rocky" Rockwell in Margaret Mead Park before he headed up north to La Perouse Bay for the summer.
